Does the thought of creating a real food kitchen overwhelm you?
Well it can be an overwhelming thought, but it doesn’t have to be.
Really, it doesn’t!
There was a time when our own kitchen was anything but real food worthy.
Our pantry had sugary cereals, packaged cookies, junky crackers, sticky fruit shaped snacks, boxed mixes for rice and potatoes, cake mixes, spice mixes…it was a real foodie’s nightmare!
Then one day the light when on.
After researching the causes and solutions of some everyday health problems, we realized that food can be medicine.
The right foods can be healing.
And doesn’t this make perfect sense?
One puts the right gas in the car because the wrong gas can do it a lot of damage, so shouldn’t one be putting the right food in the body because the wrong food can also do a lot of damage?
I don’t know, it makes pretty good sense to me.
So now what?
- Throw out or donate all of your processed food and start over.
- Finish it off and as it’s finished replace it with real food choices.
We chose the second option and finished off what we had on hand, replacing all the processed junk with non processed foods as needed.
For us this was the better choice because…
- It’s much more affordable.
- It gradually eases your family into a real food diet.
- It’s much less overwhelming when you are still learning how to eat real food.
So over time we gradually replaced all of the processed foods with real whole foods.
And we cut out fast food.
And you know what happened?
That was the first winter we didn’t catch the flus and colds that were going around. Even though we worked in the church nursery at the time. And even though everyone else got sick!
This really spoke to us that we were on the right track, and I’ll bet you want to be on the right track too.

It’s time to get your pantry ready so you will be able to throw a real food meal together in no time.
Stocking Your Real Food Pantry
Whether you revamp your pantry all at once or a little at a time, the end result is the same.
Replacing processed foods with real whole foods.
In the pantry cupboard, refrigerator and freezer.
Now it’s time to think about your kitchen tools.
For every job there is a right tool that will make that job easier.
So what are the best tools for an efficient, real food kitchen?
Of course we always tend to think we need the latest this or that to be efficient in whatever it is we are doing, whether in the kitchen or not.
But I have found that less is generally more.
Especially as far as kitchen gadgets go.
Too many times it’s more effort to use the gadget than it would be to do the job without it.
That being said, however, there are some really helpful tools to have in your kitchen.
Of course there are the obvious measuring cups, spoons, pots, and pans, but here is a list of some of our favorite tools to include in your real food kitchen.
Real Food Kitchen Tools

- A good quality knife – For cutting all of the seasonally fresh vegetables and fruits you will be feeding your family.
- A scale– Useful for our sourdough bread recipe and for dividing portions when freezing.
- Kitchen scissors – Plan on having 2 pairs, one for paper and one for food.
- At least 2 cutting boards – One for raw meat and one for fresh produce.
- Several sizes of mesh strainers – A small one for straining liquids into a jar, a medium size and a larger size for draining pasta and potatoes.
- Stainless steel and iron cookware – Stainless steel and iron are the safest to cook with. Plan on having at least 2 skillets, a dutch oven, and small, medium and large saucepans.
- Stainless steel or stoneware baking sheets, muffin tins, bread loaf pans – Again, these are the safest for cooking, stoneware being the best.
- Glass baking dishes, square and rectangular – For those casseroles, large and small.
- Stoneware – At least one stoneware baking sheet for pizza.
- Glass, oven proof storage bowls – These are so great for storing leftovers. And you can reheat them in the toaster oven. And you can freeze them too. Be sure to include a variety of sizes.
- Mason jars – These are perfect for storing broths and sauces and for freezing them. Also great for mixing salad dressing. I have 2 shelves full, one for large and one for small. And I use the small size for my drink glasses as well. It’s great to be able to have different uses for the same item.
- Crock pots– We have 3 sizes. Small, medium, and large. Great for making broths and soups and certain cuts of meats.
- Blender – A must have for smoothies.
- Immersion blender – Great for creating fast, creamy soups.
- Food processor – A real time saving, helpful appliance.
- Toaster oven – Our preferred method of reheating foods. Mine has a convection setting so it heats quickly and uniformly. Safer than the microwave with better quality results.
- Dehydrator – Not a need, but very helpful. You can dry nuts, seeds, fruit. Good for making real food snacks. You can also buy additional trays, if needed.
- Stand mixer or at least a hand mixer – Another time saving and helpful appliance.
- Popcorn maker – This is optional, but if you plan on serving your family popcorn this is the real food way to do it.
- Ice cream maker – Again this is optional, but what fun it is and how tasty to make real food ice cream for treats.
The main thing we want you to realize is that switching over to a real food kitchen doesn’t have to be complicated. There are really 3 major parts to it:
- Replacing processed and packaged foods with real food.
- Learning how to cook, starting with easy meals to cook for beginners.
- Gradually purchasing the kitchen tools you need, starting with the ones you will be using most.
